A friend of mine is loc'ing is was asking me about protective styles.
When I think of "protective styles" it reminds me of the styles that loose naturals do to protect their hair. It gave the hair a chance to rest while remaining untouched. It could help promote hair growth and give the hair and hair do-er a break. This was usually achieved by braids, twists, weaves and wigs.
I rarely did protective styles when I had a loose fro. But when I did I looooved them. I never thought to do one with my locs though. I assumed that the only way to do that would be with a wig on top of the locs.
Hell to the nah. Number one, you wouldn't catch me wearing a wig. And number two, if I did get a wig, that mess would look hilarious on top of some locs. Am I right?
And then it dawned on me...curls! The curls you see have been in for a good week and a half.
I'll more than likely keep them in for another week or so. I would consider curls a protective style because you don't have to do a thing to them yet you still manage to have a classy look. It takes some time for the curls to drop and I love how they last throughout sweaty work-outs. The curls prevent me from OCT (obsessive compulsive twisting) and no matter how I lay on them at night, I still wake up to them.
So yes, ladies...if you're looking for a style that will prevent you from twisting/latching and look decent for weeks, curls is the way to go!

i wanna try curls eventually, but more wavy instead of curly because for some reason i've always hated curls on me, lol. Chescaleigh and BronzeGoddess01 on youtube does a lot of styles that can be considered a protective style. I think even a pony tail makes a nice protective style too, it's just not as flashy or interesitng but it works for me hehe. Lookin' good girl!
I do braid outs w/ my locs and the waves/crimps hold for a good 2-3 weeks before I start thinking about redoing them. Curls are also great because the fuzzies aren't so obvious (I actually like my curls better w/ a lil fuzz!).
On a sidenote: I ran into a woman yesterday who had locs hidden under a wig!! She was actually feeling discouraged about the beginning stages, so hopefully my words encouraged her to be proud and stick with 'em.
There's also another youtube personality who wears wigs a lot underneath her gorgeous locs (and she has been locing for 2 years or so)...some people just like wearing wigs underneath their locs to take a break from them, better than cutting them off or getting a perm lol.

I love the curls on you! I prefer curls my self because they last the longest. They are tight for a couple of days, then they drop into fantastic waves! I think braid out are easier to have, but they last only a minute!
I wore a wig three times when I first became locked. I felt so self conscience. I gave the wig away and began to rock a lot of stylish hats! I think the best time to lock if you live in the north is November. By April your hair has a little more growth and you are on your way to the teens! LOL!
I curled mine for the first time and just love it. My locks are already full curling them made them even fuller :)
I concur...I've been doing pipe cleaner curls for the past 2 weeks. The first time I did them was right after a retwist...this time I did them right after a wash. My locs and new growth curl right up and you can't tell that the hair hasn't been retwisted. I think this is the only way that I can go without retwisting so much.
That is a great style on you that looks very neat.May I ask what type of roller set did you use and what kind of conditioner(s) did you use?
my favorite protective style is washing, no retwist, oiling them up, and slapping on a head band.
but, i love curly styles and i have to agree that they do make good protective styles. So do braidouts.
twopeasinapod123---> Hey mama...I'm not using conditioner right now. It only makes my build-up worse. Ugh! And I use different sizes of perm rod rollers. Love 'em!
I've been rocking pipe cleaner curls for the past 2 1/2 weeks. For the first 2 weeks I didn't separate them. THis week I've separated them and they're all full and fluffy (check out pics on my blog: http://imdippedinhoney.blogspot.com/). This is my first time trying curls and I love them!
I absolutely love this look on you! I like all of the stages of the curls from tight to loose to wavy. Lovin' it!
