Reason #42 why I will stay natural...

For Easter, I headed home to visit some of the fam. It wasn't until we were getting ready to head out until I realized how much freakin' time my Mom and sister spend on their hair.

Now granted, little sister's crop is cute and healthy.

But Lawd! 20 minutes? And hair in the sink and on the floor?

And let's not even get started on my Mommy. She's got 3 curling irons...

They spend a good 20 minutes each combing and curling and brushing and parting and spritzing. Did I really go through all of that when I was perming? Did I really spend 20 minutes just on my hair? Did I really flat iron or curl it almost every day?

Oh hells nah...if all of that ain't reason enough to stay natural, I don't know what is.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, while they spent 29 years doing their hair, I spritzed the locs with Juices and Berries, put on some liner, gloss and blush and was 'ret to go!

Almost 5 years of having natural hair and I just don't miss the perm duties. Do you?

Hell to the naw! I definitely don't miss the perm duties! Curling, flat ironing, wrapping, spritzing, combing, brushing..all of those are things of the past.

Nevertheless, your sister does have beautiful hair. On the contrary, my mom has thin, limp hair and suffers from so much breakage. It irks me to see her overprocessing her hair with relaxers and applying heat to her hair every day. I'm trying my best to convince her to step on over to the natural side.

I don't miss it at all! I just wish I became a natural sooner so I didn't have to go through all the drama with hair breakage, bad perms, bad weaves, bad hair salons, bad customer service, and bad hair care habits. I'm never turning back :) and even better, I'm gonna be locked for life!

I love the fact that I am natural and been natural for over five years. I just started locking back in September and I love how my locs are evolving. I don't miss sitting in a salon for over 4 hours, listening to meaningless conversations all while waiting to get my hair pressed and curled oh and to add that if it rained I would hurry and run for cover cause God knows I couldn't get my hair wet.. Do I miss that? Ummmmmm NO!!!!

If you don't mind me asking B, what does your family think about you being natural? Do you think your mom and sister will start to envy you and become natural?

B said...

LU---> Hmmm....you think?

LaKisha---> Girl, I don't miss it either. Having a perm was just sooo inconvenient. But I didn't realize that UNTIL I went natural. Shame! Healthy permed hair is one thing but when I see ladies with hair struggling to hold on I be wantin' to scream, "JUST GO NATURAL!"

Ness---> Remember going to the hair salon and the stylist always wanted to "trim" your hair? Like...why in the world do I always need a 3 inch trim EVERY time I go in? Sheesh!

Dawn Renee---> Right! Permed hair in Florida=a perm not lasting for more than 2 weeks. Tops! Or maybe that's just me..hmmm.

Ness---> For the most part my family has gotten "used" to me being natural. I don't live around my immediate family so they weren't really there when I started the journey. Because of that, I am constantly getting crazy questions. Which I always answer because I know they're asking out of sheer interest. My being natural is really a part of of me and my family knows that. They pick on my being vegan (I'm not really...I just like to eat healthy), sport African tattoos and being "militant" (I just call it being conscious but whatever). So when they think about my natural hair, I'm sure they're just like, "That's just B."

Now as far as my sister and Mom going natural, I doubt my sister will any time soon. She's 20 and wants to go to law school. She's all conservative and ish and doesn't think natural hair is professional. I never have the time, patience or desire to argue with her about that one.

My Mom on the other hand, wants to go natural. "In a few years," she says. She is always asking about my locs and I can see her getting Sisterlocks in the future. But my question to her is always, "What are you waiting on?" I'm sure if I lived at home and could nag her enough, I could get her to BC, rock a TWA and eventually loc.

Have you gotten your fam to go natural?

I definitely do not miss my permed hair for this reason right here --> "Meanwhile back at the ranch, while they spend 29 years doing their hair, I spritzed the locs with Juices and Berries, put on some liner, gloss and blush and was 'ret to go!"

It is a beautiful thing to be ready to roll in 5 minutes and still look haute!

My favorite part of being loced is going swimming and not worrying about my hair getting wet. Yeah I have to shampoo and condition after but who cares I love shampooing in the shower.

I'm so glad you shared this. I've been wondering why getting ready for me is only 10 minutes now vs. 10 decades in comparison to my female friends....

cosign on not missing the perm duties

B- my mom does not perm her hair anymore, so she is natural, but she does flat iron her hair A LOT and wears a wig every single day for as long as I've ever known her. Back in the day she wore an afro lol. But I don't see my mom sporting her natural hair, she likes to look very conservative and "professional" and I think she's far too insecure to really sport it without having to hide it or press it constantly. I didn't influence her to be natural though, but naturally she has noticed that I am natural, but I don't think she understands that I am locking my hair and she still thinks that I am going to a salon (because apparently I don't think she can believe that I can actually do it myself lol). As for the rest of my family...no way, lol. Only me and my uncle who has been locking his hair for over 18 years sport our natural hair loud and proud :)

I don't miss it at all! I wish I went natural earlier! Getting relaxers was so expensive, my scalp would always get burned then the following morning, I would pick the scabs...horrible!!

then 2 weeks later, you would think I did nothing...sigh
Little by little, my sisters went natural then now my mother!

I love your sis's hair. Very healthy!!

juices and berries? LOL, that is too funny. Hey loc rocker, I love your post, and page, and style, and... Hell I love you (from a distance). Not in a stalker way but you inspired me to start my own blog. I like your post and I feel you on the natural hair it and go tip. I SO do not miss hair shoppin it or primping for hours on end. also, your posting about how sometimes "people" don't understand us for being loc rockers with pride. I got some family members who...hahaha are too funny, always gruntin when they see me asking STUPID questions about my hair... They just don't understand it and I REALLY just don't understand them! xoxo Khyla

don't miss it at all! Got my mom and aunt to let go of the perm too, once they saw how care free I was, actually it was how fast my hair was growing that sold them.

I just started my loc journey. I miss my free flowing natural hair but I def do not miss a perm. The smell, the chemical, the creamy texture of goo- nah I don't miss known of it.

Naw I don't miss the relaxers or the curling irons. Before I went natural I spent almost 2yrs wasting my hair to realize I couldn't handle relaxers on top of stress.

It took a year to get me committed to natural but I'm glad I did it. My hair is wonderful & not falling out at the drop of a dime.
