It's stories like that prove that black hair a big effing deal. And not always in a good way. This story pisses me off to no end and I hope that they press charges. And march. I am sick of people telling us that our hair is not professional. Peep the video and let me know what y'all think. Thanks Aisha.
P.S. I know some of y'all are down with the word "dreads" but it kinda makes me cringe the way its used in this story. Or is that just me? Probably. LOL!
This is all about standing up for ourselves - if we did that, we wouldn't have to deal with nonsense like this. Sadly, the loudest voices against natural hair are Black people.
Riiiiight? I'm the non-violent type but they'd probably have to call the popo-s on me. I'm being discriminated against AND I can't get my money back? Oh hellllssss no.
MS native here...and all I can say is...That's MS for you! This is clearly racially motivated and what really pisses me off is the comment "...to a higher standard." WTF does that suppose to mean? My husband and I have talked about this story over and over again. It is just unnerving and makes my freaking skin crawl. The sad part is that now all schools will run and try to put it in their school policy which sucks for the black children. No one says anything when the white boys grow their hair out in long mullets and crap. If he was white with a long mullet, he would be on the court. If a black guy grows his hair out, then he will either have an afro, will have braids, or locs. I am sure none of those will fit the bill for their standards. So it's okay for a white boy to grow his hair out, but a black boy can't do the same. BS! So what if he relaxed it...then he wouldn't be able to be on the court because of some other reason, like looking like a girl. This is the most blatant form of discrimination I have ever seen. I live in the most discriminating state in the country! IMHO
From work places to schools to playing fields, discussion about natural hair by others seems to be growing. At the same time, our apprehension of natural hair is reducing. Hmmm...Is it related?
I'll be posting this on the "workplace discrimination" page for MyDreadlocks.com. It's not work but it is discriminatory and students should be prepared for the onslaught of ignorance. [Sigh]
This bafoon-ary does not shock me one bit! I would not be suprised if the pricipal him/herself is African American. Unfortunately it is mostly African Americans/Colored Folk who have major problems with one anothers natural hair b/c it is not viewed as the "high standard" of European beauty. Of course not! We're not European. And I just love how the news station only had two, African American broadcasters/reporters to cover the story, so as to show "genuine" concern and empathy. Such BS!
Da HAYLE!? See, I would have soooo been the stereotype of an angry black woman if this happened to me. I'm talkin' neck rolling, finger snappin, foul mouthed epic and utter foolishness. Totally goin-da-hayle-off-ness. SMDH @ this mess. I hope they sue!

If the locs aren't banned in policy, then he should be allowed to go. Period. This is incredibly ignorant.
Ridiculous!
So wait a second...he was banned from homecoming for his locs AND they didn't refund his money? I'd cause a scene at that school.

You have got to be kidding me.. especially since there isn't an actual rule/policy on it.
Oppression pure and simple. If we're not allowed to focus on the colour of your skin, let's just focus on the style of your hair. SMH
